I wanted to share with you some exciting news that will make our advocacy efforts on your behalf even more effective. Last month, The Recording Artists' Coalition (RAC) announced an alliance with our Academy that will allow it to continue its mission as a program of The Recording Academy rather than as a separate nonprofit organization. RAC will become an integral program of The Academy's "GRAMMYs on the Hill" initiative, which advances the rights of music creators through advocacy, education and dialogue. Congressional Quarterly described the alliance as creating a "supersized musicians' lobby" on Capitol Hill.
RAC was founded in 2000 by Don Henley and Sheryl Crow to address legislative issues that affect the recording artist community. The Academy opened its Washington, D.C. office in 1998 and has since launched numerous programs to advance music makers' rights, including the music community's only annual grassroots lobbying day in Washington, D.C. Together, under the GRAMMY banner, our organizations will present a single, clear voice in Washington to fight for your rights.
I also want to provide you with a link to our most recent issue of Capitol Tracks magazine: Capitol Tracks: Winter 2009 In this edition, you'll find information about The Academy's activities at the Democratic and Republican conventions, our legislative victories on behalf of music creators and of course, our ongoing battle for a radio royalty for performers.
Thank you for all of your support for our advocacy efforts.
Kind regards,
Neil Portnow
President/CEO
The Recording Academy
